Sunsets in Santorini are said to be the most awe-inspiring not only in the whole of Greece nor Europe but in the entirety of the world. Every traveler, every travel book, every person I know who has gone to the island speaks of how amazing the sunset was there. Such fame and the curiosity it sparks that urged Me and Jill to put it on our Top Things to Do in Santorini. Being our dream destination for years and visiting the island for the very first time that is, we scoured various reviews about the best spot to bask in the splendor of this sunset. Alas, TripAdvisor pointed us to the direction of V LOUNGE CAFE & COCKTAIL BAR, rated as the No.1 of all restaurants in Fira!
However, as mentioned in my previous post, The Breathtaking Town of Fira, we were having second thoughts about going there due to the reviews which repeatedly mentioned that V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar prices were comparatively higher than those of the other restaurants in town. Convincing Jill that we should at least check it out, we proceeded to V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar, perched high above the rooftop along Fira’s clifside.
Setting foot at V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar at around late 5:00 pm, we were warmly greeted by one of the servers, Sashco (Apologies, I’m quite sure I’ve spelled his name incorrectly – sorry for that – But it’s how his name sounds like). A very courteous, professional and hospitable guy, Sashco happily allowed us to roam around freely after we told him that we were searching for a place where we could enjoy the Fira Sunset. A couple of seconds of seeing the place is all it took for us be utterly convinced that V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar was THE PLACE!
We immediately asked Sashco if we could reserve a table for 7pm, requesting specifically for a table that maximized the views of the caldera and the sunset. We were afraid that they might be fully-booked (reviews strongly advise to book ahead of time) but luckily enough, a spot was available right the the edge of V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar’s fantastic rooftop! After having our table reserved, we sped hastily back to our hotel, Costa Marina Villas, to take a quick shower and change for the night! Excitedly heading back to V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar, Sashco lead us to our table which already had a Reserved sign on it!
The thing we loved the most about this restaurant is that instead of having the usual boring seats, V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar have sofas set around a low lying table where guests are able to lounge, recline, or even put their feet up or just position themselves however they like while enjoying the spectacular views that it offers!
Speaking of views, V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar definitely makes the most out of it! You might wonder why Santorini is world-famous and somehow more popular than its other brothers in the Cyclades group of islands or any other Greek Islands nonetheless. The main reason is that the island is one of a kind – there’s no other landscape on the face of the Earth that offers an unobstructed scenery of the horizon so high above the sea.
This and with the dramatic backdrop of the volcanoes of Palea and Neo Kameni (to which present-day Santorini owes its unique form – a result of a massive volcanic explosion that split the once single large island of Thira) and the lateral views of the island’s crescent shape land mass that makes Santorini such a breathtaking and one of a kind place!
This vantage point is what makes sunset in Santorini so special and one of the must-do’s when visiting the island – definitely something that we didn’t want to miss. Surely, the sunset in the town of Oia, a 20-minute ride away from Fira, has the the title of having the Best Sunset in the World, but the capital town’s sunset is nevertheless something that every traveler should see. And since we were in Santorini, we didn’t want to choose between the two, we wanted to experience the sunset from both places!
Having read the menu which was extensive to say the least and with the suggestions from Sashco, we were happy to know that V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar offered wines locally produced in Santorini. Learning that due to the volcanic fertile soil, anything grown in the island has a unique signature flavor to it, we were ecstatic in sampling local wines taste especially after getting more curious seeing numerous vineyards around. We wanted something a bit sweet and refreshing so Sashco recommended to us Terra Nerra, a dry rose wine – an advice which we gladly took! Wanting to just have something light as we were planning to have dinner somewhere else that night, we just ordered their Antipasto to munch on.
When our orders arrived though, we were quite sure that there would be no place for dinner anymore!
We didn’t expect that V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar’s Antipasto was overflowing with Sun Dried Tomatoes, Olives, Prosciutto, Melon, Buffalo Mozzarella, Salami, Pesto, Olive Oil & Balsamic and Breads!
We simply loved all of it! The earthy, mellow salty-sweet Sun Dried Tomatoes and the one of a kind taste of Santorini-grown olives was something to die for! The prosciutto (dry-cured Italian ham) wrapped around one of the sweetest melons we’ve ever tasted was a treat by itself – also, it was the first time we’ve tried eating pork together with a fruit. And with the Salami & Buffallo Mozarella together with V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar’s awesome signature Olive Oil & Balsamic Vinegar sauce and a basket of bread, we were truly in for a gastronomic delight!
Perfectly pairing those with the sweet and smooth Terra Nera wine, tastefully served on a chilled bucket of ice, gracefully poured by Sashco to each of our glasses – everything was perfect! “Ah, this is life!”, I remember us saying!
V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar was a perfect place – romantic, scenic, great food & drinks, it was the ideal place to just let time pass you by! There was even a couple smooching at the table right behind ours!
As sunset was nearing, we noticed that thick clouds were looming over! We were quite afraid that they would hide the setting sun from us and would spoil our one & only chance of witnessing the sunset said to be one of the most beautiful in the world. And having known from Sashco that it exactly was the case for their guests a day or two before certainly made us more anxious! But to our delight, what seemed to be the cause of our despair actually made the whole Fira sunset experience one of the most wondrous moments we’ve ever had!
With the sun slowly kissing the horizon at almost 8pm, the explosion of colors was beyond words! The golden light streamed across the Aegean becoming river-like splitting the horizon into two banks of dark blues…
And like a flame being lit as the night comes, the clouds became fiery yellow and orange – it’s not hard to imagine why the Ancients thought that the Sun-God Apollo was riding a flaming chariot while travelling across the Greek skies!
Slowly, the sun bade us goodbye that day and we were speechless – a timeless experience indeed! Now we completely understood why sunsets in this place so much talked about!
As Fira was slowly blanketed in darkness, the winds suddenly changed from cool to really chilly! Good thing V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar provided us and other guests with blankets to keep us warm – this with the table candles being set afire made the place cozier.
Then the magic happens – from V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar as you witness how Fira and the other towns in the island slowly light up spoiling your eyes with sights that no superlatives can ever describe!
V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar is so much worth every Euro: Our Terra Nera wine only costed us 24 Euros for a bottle and the wonderful Antipasti only a mere 14 Euros! But when everything’s said and done, you simply can’t put a price on the experience it offers can you? Much more to the timeless sunset that is that of Fira’s! We finally decided to end the night at around 9:30pm though we still wanted to stay more – I even accidentally broke my wine glass (Sorry, V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar)! Overall it was a fantastic experience and I can say to you to not mind the price – V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar will be worth it and much, much more! I highly recommend the place!
Thanks for giving as such a wonderful night V Lounge Cafe & Cocktail Bar & special thanks to Sascho for making it even better!
